Keanu Reeves Insisted John Wick 4 Make Him Suffer in ‘New and Interesting Ways’

John Wick 4 star Keanu Reeves shares his one main goal for the upcoming sequel: Make the character suffer in new and interesting ways.

Keanu Reeves insisted to his John Wick: Chapter 4 director, Chad Stahelski, that the titular assassin must suffer like never before.

Stahelski spoke to The Hollywood Reporter during Lionsgate’s CinemaCon presentation and shared his approach for upping the ante on the action while making Wick experience worse pain than in the previous films. “We keep finding new and interesting ways to have John Wick suffer,” Stahelski said. “That’s where the action comes from. Figure out how to make him suffer, and then design backward.”

The footage that debuted at CinemaCon featured Wick getting into all kinds of epic madness from horse riding in the desert to smashing someone’s head with nunchucks. Reeves was a major contributor to these action sequences during the writing process. “I’ve called out a couple of things, like, let’s get on a horse in the desert,” Reeves said. “Let’s drive a little bit.” The film will also feature Wick’s new skills with the help of a multicultural stunt team that helped to train Reeves for the action.

With the stakes raised this time around, fans have wondered if the fourth chapter of the highly successful franchise will be the last. Reeves is keeping his lips sealed while keeping the book open for a new chapter. “We just attack one at a time,” Reeves said. Director Stahelski added, “We do it chapter by chapter. Just like an author; write the chapter, scratch head, write next chapter.”

Though plot details remain under wraps, John Wick: Chapter 4 will likely pick up after Chapter 3’s ending, where Wick teams up with Laurence Fishburne’s Bowery King to take on the High Table. In addition to the upcoming sequel, the spinoff film Ballerina was announced with Ana de Armas in the lead and Len Wiseman directing. On top of that, a spinoff series titled The Continental is set to premiere on Starz with Colin Woodell portraying a younger version of Ian McShane’s Winston Scott, the owner of the Continental Hotel.

Reeves stars alongside John Wick franchise veterans, including McShane, Fishburne and Lance Riddick. The franchise will also welcome newcomers Donnie Yen, Shamier Anderson, Bill Skarsgård, Hiroyuki Sanada, Scott Adkins, Clancy Brown and Rina Sawayama.

Directed by Stahelski from a screenplay by Shay Hatten and Michael Finch, John Wick: Chapter 4 hits theaters on March 24, 2023.
