Scarlett Johansson’s First Black Widow Suit Fitting Shown In New Image

Black Widow costume designer Jany Temime posts a throwback photo of Scarlett Johansson trying on her costume for the movie for the first time.

A new image reveals the first time Scarlett Johansson tried on her suit for Black Widow. First introduced back in Iron Man 2, Johansson’s Black Widow/ Natasha Romanoff would go on to become a core member of the Avengers team. After playing important roles in all of the Avengers films, Black Widow ultimately sacrificed herself in Avengers: Endgame so that Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye could obtain the Soul Stone in an effort to reverse Thanos’ snap and restore the portion of the population that had been blipped.

While Black Widow didn’t make it through Avengers: Endgame alive, the character did appear in her very own standalone film in 2021, which was set right after the events of Captain America: Civil War. After years of teases regarding the character’s past, Black Widow finally delves more into Natasha’s upbringing and even introduces a number of her family members, including fan-favorite Yelena Belova played by Florence Pugh. Black Widow was met with generally positive reviews, but because of its simultaneous release in theaters and on Disney+ due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the film’s box office did take a hit.

In a new image posted to Instagram from Black Widow costume designer Jany Temime, Johansson can be seen trying on her suit for the film for the very first time. The caption accompanying the photo reads: “First fitting of Scarlett in the Black Widow costume. Brilliant, powerful, beautiful. She is gorgeous!” Check out the image below:

Although Black Widow wears a number of different suits throughout the many films she appears in, the character is frequently depicted wearing all black. The black suit in the photo features elbow pads, shoulder pads, shin guards, a tactical belt, and the character’s iconic wrist gauntlet. In the Black Widow film, the final suit would ultimately feature some additional accents and details not pictured in Temime’s photo, in addition to two thigh holsters and accompanying pistols, which would have been created and supplied in collaboration with the film’s props department.

As one of the non-super-powered members of the Avengers, it makes sense that Black Widow’s costume is more tactical in appearance and less like a super suit. The costume reflects Natasha’s character and the surgical precision she uses when carrying out missions, which frequently involve literally operating in the shadows. Although Johansson’s Black Widow likely won’t be appearing in any future MCU projects, the introduction of Pugh’s Yelena character does create a number of interesting possibilities in terms of carrying on her sister’s legacy. If Temime chooses to return to work on future Black-Widow-related projects, at least fans can rest assured that the costume design will remain top-notch.
