Though that’s still Jolie’s most famous scandalous moment, it’s also hard to forget that she kissed her brother James Haven on the lips at the 2000 Academy Awards ceremony (and on several other occasions). They were “inseparable” since childhood but reportedly “drifted apart” some years ago. Here’s what really happened to their relationship.

After kissing her brother at the 2000 Oscars ceremony, Jolie said she was “so in love with my brother right now,” as she received her award for Best Supporting Actress. But for the siblings, it was just them being each other’s support system. The two formed an unbreakable bond early on when their parents Marcheline Bertrand and Jon Voight divorced in 1976, after five years of marriage. According to Haven, their dad “never did his job as a father” which left them “horrible memories of [his] father and the way he behaved.”
Voight was apparently “so tough,” making the siblings “very protective” of their mother who gave up her career to raise them. “There were times when our dad was awesomely good with us, but my biggest and most abiding memory is that he would look more to our faults than to our strengths,” Haven added. So when their mother died of cancer in 2007, he and her sister became even closer. “Nobody in the world knew that they spent the day in hospital. It was like, ‘Look where we’re at now.’ But the world saw something incestual,” said Jolie’s former carer Cis Rundle.
“I couldn’t stop crying. Fortunately, I was with Angie when we heard,” Haven said of their loss. “Angelina and I are orphans too, in a way. When you see those kids in orphanages, they cling to each other. And that’s exactly what they have — they have each other.” He added that the Eternals star “has always been very protective of me with regards to my romantic life, which I love. I go to Angie for advice and won’t do anything without her because we were so close as children.”

After Jolie filed for divorce from Brad Pitt in 2016, Haven moved into his sister’s rented home in Malibu to act as a “manny” (male nanny) to the kids. “He took on a more active daily role in June,” a source told Us Weekly at that time. “The kids call him ‘Uncle James.'” The insider added that Pitt didn’t have any issues with the arrangement. “Brad thinks highly of James,” they continued. “He’s always been incredible to the kids and is welcome in his home.”
A separate source also told Daily Mail that Haven was practically in charge of the household. “It was his job to be there if any of the kids woke up during the night and to deal with the [other] nannies if they had any issues,” shared the insider. “He was virtually running the household.” He was also spotted in the playground with the children amid Jolie and Pitt’s heated custody and divorce battle.
Why Angelina Jolie & James Haven ‘Drifted Apart’
In 2021, a source revealed that the siblings “drifted apart” not long after Haven’s manny stint. “Angelina and James are widely believed to have drifted apart some years ago,” an insider told Daily Mail. The falling out happened “all of a sudden” and “with no real explanation.” The two just went from “being inseparable” to not speaking to each other.
“Their communication seemed to just stop out of nowhere. He does his thing, she does hers and while they may be cordial from a distance you certainly don’t see or hear of them being together,” explained the insider. “Obviously only they know what really happened, but it’s sad and the situation doesn’t look like changing any time soon.” But according to Radar Online, the siblings may have gotten in each other’s nerves.
“Angelina puts James through hell when he can’t keep the kids quiet while she’s trying to work, and has him making her coffees and going out to buy her groceries like he’s some kind of assistant,” claimed their source. “This isn’t what he signed up for when he agreed to help!” In 2017, a source told Grazia that Haven was actually helping out five other nannies. He was “quietly dismissed” by the Maleficent star when his duties took a “heavy toll” on him.
